Ships & Aircraft Visits

These visits to major UK ports, terminals and airports have been developed to enable students to gain hands-on logistics experience in support of their ITOPS award. It also provides opportunities for students to increase their awareness of import and export shipping procedures, enabling them to enhance their skills and gain greater confidence in the world of international transportation.

Typically these field visits aim to improve understanding of such varied subjects as:

•  Hazardous cargo declaration and stowage
•  Influence of weather conditions on ships schedules
•  Port congestion and labour issues
•  Scale of port operation
•  Container handling
•  Loading and stripping of containers
•  Customs procedures and examinations
•  The importance of correct description of cargo
•  The need for accurate weights and measurements of cargo
•  Security and "Known Shipper" requirements
•  AMS procedures
•  Ro-Ro and O.O.G. cargo
